Trusted Dental Crowns Treatments in DFW

Dental crowns, also known as dental caps, are prosthetic devices used to cover or replace damaged teeth that offer strength, protection, and improved aesthetics.

Here are common reasons your dentist might recommend a dental (tooth) crown:

  • A natural tooth is damaged or cracked.
  • An implant needs to be covered.
  • A natural tooth has undergone a root canal.
  • Natural teeth need better alignment.
  • A natural tooth is weakened from a cavity or severe decay.
  • For aesthetic purposes (achieve a better smile by adjusting the size, shape and/or color of your teeth)

Protection and Restoration

When a tooth is significantly damaged due to decay or fractures, a dental crown provides a protective cover that restores the tooth’s shape, strength, and functionality.

Strengthening
Weak Teeth

Teeth that are weakened by large fillings, root canal treatment, or other factors may be prone to breaking or fracturing. A dental crown provides reinforcement and support to such weakened teeth, helping to prevent fractures and improve their longevity.

Cosmetic
Enhancement

Dental crowns can greatly improve the appearance of teeth. They can be used to cover stained or discolored teeth that don’t respond to teeth whitening procedures. Crowns can also correct the shape, size, and alignment of teeth, enhancing overall smile aesthetics.

Restoration after
Root Canal Treatment

When a tooth undergoes root canal treatment, the inner pulp is removed, leaving the tooth hollowed out and structurally weaker. Placing a dental crown over the treated tooth helps protect it from further damage.

Tooth Replacement in Bridges & Implants

Dental crowns play a crucial role in dental bridges and implants. A dental bridge uses crowns on the healthy teeth to anchor a false tooth, filling the gap left by a missing tooth.

Steps in a Dental Crown Procedure

Dental crown procedures at Perla Dental involve multiples steps to ensure a perfect final product that is specifically customized to your mouth and smile. A dental crown procedure involves 2 separate appointments that involve the following process:

First Day of a Dental Crown Treatment:

STEP 1 - Consultation and Examination:

The process begins with an initial consultation with your dentist. They will examine the tooth or teeth that require a crown and evaluate if a crown is the appropriate treatment option. X-rays may be taken to assess the tooth’s condition.

STEP 2 - Tooth Preparation:

If a dental crown is needed, the next step is tooth preparation. The dentist will numb the area around the tooth and then reshape the tooth by removing a portion of its outer structure. This is done to create space for the crown to fit properly.

STEP 3 - Impression Taking:

After tooth preparation, an impression of the tooth is taken. This is done by placing a soft material, usually dental putty, in a tray that is positioned over the tooth. The putty is allowed to be set for a few minutes, creating an impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth. The impression serves as a mold to fabricate the crown.

STEP 4 - Temporary Crown Placement:

Since the final crown is custom-made in a dental laboratory, a temporary crown is typically placed over the prepared tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being created. The temporary crown is usually made of acrylic or composite resin and is attached using temporary cement.

Second Day of a Dental Crown Treatment:

STEP 5 - Crown Placement:

Once the permanent crown is ready, you will return to the dentist for its placement. The temporary crown is removed, and the dentist will check the shape and color of the permanent crown, adjustments may be made as necessary. Once satisfied with the fit and aesthetics, the dentist will use dental cement to permanently bond the crown to your tooth.
