Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection involving the tissues responsible for holding your teeth in place. Gums provide the foundation for your teeth. Without healthy gums, teeth will be lost!

Gum disease is caused by the accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth that builds up on the teeth over time and causes inflammation. The buildup of plaque is typically caused by poor oral health because of poor brushing habits and not flossing. Inflammation results in symptoms like red, swollen, bleeding gums.

Gum disease treatment is important to diagnose and treat as advanced forms of the disease lead to loss of teeth of other health concerns, like diabetes and heart diseases. The American Heart Association says that 50% of heart attacks and strokes are caused by oral (mouth) bacteria.

Gum Disease Treatment Options

Scaling & Root Planing

Non-surgical treatment option.

Involves deep cleaning gums and teeth to remove plaque from under the gum line and the tooth’s surface while smoothing the surface of the root to heal and stop future buildup. Treatment removes bacteria, lowers inflammation, and halts the progression of the disease. To be most successful in decreasing the destruction process, antibiotics are required.

Antibiotic Therapy

Non-surgical treatment option.

Targeted antibiotic placement at the site of the most infection is highly successful in stopping in stopping further destruction and lowers pocket depth.

Surgery

Surgery is an invasive procedure for advanced periodontal disease. Through surgical intervention, the infected tissue is removed, and the gum and bone tissue are reshaped.

Surgical intervention delays or eliminates further gum and teeth damage, and helps lower pocket depth, halt gum recession, and stop tooth loss.

Stages of Gum Disease

  • Gingivitis

Earliest stage of the disease which produces symptoms like swollen and bleeding gums. Treatment at this stage can eliminate further progress of the disease and reverses disease by maintaining oral hygiene practices, getting regular exams and cleanings, antibiotics, and making lifestyle changes (if recommended). Remember, just a “simple” (prophy) will not solve gum disease.

  • Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, it will turn into periodontitis which causes the gum bone and tissue to start receding, causing loose teeth and gaps (or pockets) between them. Treatment options in this stage of gum disease includes scaling, root planing, antibiotics, and maybe surgery. The dentist may also use other procedures to remove bacteria to reduce inflammation and promote healthy gum tissue. Deep cleanings eliminate about 26% of the harmful bacteria along with an effective regimen of antibiotics.

  • Advanced Periodontitis

Most advanced stage of gum disease where the damage to the tissues and the bone supporting the teeth are irreversible. Patients at this stage often experience tooth loss. Treatment procedures during this stage include bone grafting, tooth extraction, dental implants (replacement teeth), or dentures (if all teeth have fallen out or been removed).

Causes & Symptoms of Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Gum disease occurs from bacteria on teeth that causes the buildup of plaque over time causing infection of the tissue surrounding the teeth and inflammation of the gums. This condition is caused by poor oral health due to lack of brushing, flossing, or regular dental exams and cleanings.

Here are some other factors that increase the chances of developing gum disease:

  • Smoking
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Diabetes
  • Genetics
  • Specific medications

Symptoms of gum disease differ based on how far the disease has progressed, and will often include:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Gums bleeding during brushing or flossing
  • Receding gums, which gives the appearance of longer teeth
  • Constant bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Pus between the gums and teeth
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Changes in bite or the way teeth fit together
  • Changes in teeth spacing
  • Loss of teeth

How to Take Care of Dentures?

Dentures are an investment in your oral health and appearance. Proper care and maintenance is important to maintain function, gum health, and look of your dentures.

Cleaning & Maintenance:

  1. Rinse dentures thoroughly after eating to remove food particles.
  2. Brush dentures using a soft-bristled brush and a gentle denture cleaner.
  3. Soak dentures overnight in a denture-cleaning solution to eliminate stains or bacteria.

Handling and Storage:

  1. Handle your dentures carefully and always hold them over a smooth surface in case they slip out of your hands.
  2. Store your dentures in a clean, dry container with a lid when not wearing them. Don’t leave them in the open, as they can accumulate dust or get damaged.

Common Issues with Dentures and How to Address Them:

  1. Loose or ill-fitting dentures: Such dentures can cause discomfort or even lead to mouth sores. Speak with your dentist and get the devices adjusted or replaced if needed.
  2. Irritation or sores in the mouth: In this case, take out your dentures. Now, rinse your mouth with lukewarm salt water. Speak with your dentist if the problem persists.
  3. Stains or discoloration: Dentures can become stained or discolored over the course of their usage. Regularly clean and soak them in water to remove some of these stains.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long do gum disease treatment take?

The duration of the treatment depends on the extent of the disease and the treatment method. Gingivitis can often be treated with a professional dental cleaning and improving oral hygiene and health. Depending on the cleaning required, it can be done in 1-2 appointments.

Treatment of advanced-stage gum disease takes much longer time, and later stages of the disease cause irreversible damage. Treatment involves scaling and root planing, antibiotics, oral surgery, and tooth extraction.

  • Is gum surgery necessary for treating gum disease?

No, gum surgery isn’t always required to treat the disease. Treatment depends on the extent of the disease and the damage to your gums and teeth. The early-stage of the disease (gingivitis) can be treated without surgical intervention with treatments like root planing and the use of antibiotics. However, surgical treatments become necessary if your gum disease has progressed to an advanced stage.

  • What can I do at home to prevent gum disease?

You can easily cure gum disease at home or prevent it by following oral hygiene practices. Start by brushing your teeth twice and flossing them once daily to keep the gumline healthy. Avoid consuming too many starchy and sugary foods as they increase bacterial growth in your mouth. Stop smoking or excessively consuming tobacco products as they increase the risk of the disease. Finally, schedule regular dental appointments to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

  • Will my dental insurance cover the cost of gum disease treatment?

In general, most dental insurance plans cover preventive care such as regular dental cleanings, exams, and X-rays. However, coverage of gum disease treatments may depend on the type and severity of the disease and the treatment recommended by your dentist. Perla Dental accepts most major dental insurance plans, including most Medicare, Medicaid, and VA insurance plans. We also offer flexible and easy payment plans for those without insurance.

  • Will I lose my teeth with periodontal disease?

Yes – when left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to eventual tooth loss. With the advancement of the disease, the bacteria destroy the fibers that anchor the teeth to the bone, causing them to eventually fall out. However, proper treatment and good oral hygiene can slow or reverse the progression of the disease.

  • Can saltwater treat gum infections?

A saltwater rinse removes excessive fluid and lowers swelling, which reduces pain and promotes recovery. But a saltwater rinse is inadequate to fully treat gum disease. It is essential to see your dentist for the correct diagnosis and treatment.
